How to Train Outfield Route Time at Home: The Point-and-Go Timer Drill

Ask most youth coaches how they evaluate an outfielder and they will talk about speed and arm strength. Both matter. But the trait that separates outs from doubles is quieter and more coachable: route efficiency — the ability to travel from the ready position to the landing spot of the ball along the straightest, most controlled line, in the fewest seconds. That is what we mean by route time, and the good news for busy families and small programs is that you can train it in a backyard with nothing more than a phone and a few markers. Why route time is the metric that matters
Every ball hit to the outfield has a hang time and a landing point. The fielder cannot change either. What the fielder controls is how efficiently they close the gap between where they start and where the ball comes down. Two players with identical foot speed can have very different results: one reads the ball, opens cleanly, and runs a straight line; the other false-steps, rounds the route into a banana curve, and arrives a half-step late — the difference between a routine catch and a ball off the wall.
Because the landing spot is fixed on any given ball, route time is largely a function of three things you can drill: the quality of the first step (did the athlete commit to the right direction immediately?), the shape of the path (straight versus rounded), and controlled speed (running hard and gathering late rather than drifting). The Point-and-Go drill borrows that logic and shrinks it to a backyard. By keeping the start signal and the finish landmark identical every rep, the stopwatch becomes an honest scoreboard. If the athlete rounds the route or hesitates, the clock punishes it. If they read early and run the string, the clock rewards it. You are training one clean number: of_route_time_s, seconds from the go-signal to arrival at a fixed spot.
The mechanics of an efficient route
Before you time anything, understand what a good route looks like so you know what you are reinforcing.
- The pre-pitch split-step. Just as a ball is released or a bat strikes, the outfielder makes a small split-step so the feet reload underneath the body. This puts the athlete on the balls of the feet, ready to push in any direction. Landing the split too late is the most common cause of a slow first step.
- The read and drop-step. For anything hit over the head or to a gap, the fastest way to cover ground is to open the hips with a drop-step (or crossover) and run like a sprinter — never backpedal. Backpedaling is slower and less stable, and it is a top reason young outfielders lose deep balls.
- The straight line. The shortest distance to the ball is a straight line to its landing spot, not a curve. Rounding the route feels natural because it keeps the ball in front, but it adds distance and time. Elite routes look almost boringly direct.
- Speed control at the end. Accelerate through most of the route and gather in the last two steps to catch under control. Decelerating too early wastes the whole point of a fast route.
The drill isolates and rewards all four of these without needing a coach to hit fungoes.
How the Backyard Point-and-Go Timer Drill fits into practice
This is a low-footprint drill, which is its biggest strength. It needs only 15-20 yards of flat, clear ground, three or four markers (shoes, cones, or chalk), and a phone for timing or slow-motion video. That makes it ideal for:
- At-home homework between team practices, when field time is scarce.
- Individual warm-up or skills stations before a team session.
- Rainy-day gym work on a flat indoor surface.
A typical block is 3-4 sets of 6 timed routes, alternating directions (deep-left, straight-back, deep-right), with 45-60 seconds of rest between sets — about 20 minutes total. The partner claps once as the "pitch," the athlete split-steps, and the partner points sharply to one landmark. The clock starts on the point and stops on arrival or the catch. Log best and average times per direction so you can spot a slow side. Most players discover they are noticeably slower going to their glove side or over one shoulder, which tells you exactly where to spend reps.
Because the cue is a point rather than a real batted ball, even a parent with no coaching background can run it. And a solo athlete can pre-record a random voice or video cue, or use a random-number app, then chase their own call while the phone films every rep for slow-motion timing.
How to progress it
Start simple and add difficulty only once the movement is clean:
- Master the shape first. Early on, ignore the clock and film the routes. Confirm the athlete opens with a drop-step and runs a straight line before you start chasing times. A fast rounded route is a bad habit reinforced.
- Introduce the timer. Once the path is straight, add the stopwatch and establish a baseline average to a fixed 12-15 yard landmark.
- Widen, deepen, and disguise. Move landmarks to 18-20 yards, add a short-in marker to train coming forward, and have the partner delay or fake the point to force a true read rather than an anticipated one.
- Add a real catch. Finish with a tossed tennis ball so the rep ends in genuine tracking, not just a spot-touch.
- Layer fatigue for older athletes. Run 6-rep blocks with short rest so efficient routes hold up when tired.
Success is concrete: the athlete lowers their average route time to the same landmark by at least two-tenths of a second versus day one, with video confirming a straight, non-rounded line.
Safety and age considerations
Sprinting and change of direction are safe for young athletes when the surface and volume are appropriate. Use a flat, obstacle-free area with sure footing, wear athletic shoes, and warm up with a few minutes of jogging and dynamic movement before timing anything. For 10U-12U players, keep landmark distances shorter (10-12 yards) and volume modest to protect developing joints, and prioritize clean movement over stopwatch numbers. National youth guidelines from organizations like the National Strength and Conditioning Association emphasize technique-first, low-volume speed and agility work for pre-adolescent athletes — this drill fits that model well.
