Why time to plate is the pitcher's most-ignored number
Ask most young pitchers what their fastball reads on the gun and they will tell you to the tenth of a mile per hour. Ask them their time to plate and you will get a blank stare. That is backwards. In the running game, the pitcher owns most of the clock. When a runner steals second, the math is simple: the pitcher's time to plate plus the catcher's pop time has to beat the runner's time from first to second. A catcher with an elite 1.9-second pop time is helpless behind a pitcher who takes 1.6 seconds to deliver. Shave two-tenths off the pitcher and you have turned a stolen base into an out without the catcher throwing any harder.
Time to plate is defined as the elapsed time from the pitcher's first movement toward home out of the stretch until the ball reaches the catcher's glove at the plate. It bundles three things a pitcher controls: how long they hold, how efficiently they get down the mound, and their arm speed. And unlike velocity, it needs no expensive tech to train. What the drill actually trains
The drill strips the run game down to the one variable a pitcher can rehearse alone: the speed and repeatability of getting the ball out of the stretch. There is no runner and no catcher, so nothing distracts from the clock. A taped box on a garage door supplies the accountability that the pitch still has to be a strike, and the phone supplies the honest measurement. The point is not to produce one lucky fast rep - it is to lower the average time to plate while holding strike accuracy, because a quick delivery that sails to the backstop hands the offense a base anyway.
This matters for developmental honesty, too. A radar gun tells a pitcher something they mostly cannot change in a week. Time to plate is trainable in a single session: tightening the hold, shrinking the leg lift, and driving more directly toward the plate can visibly move the number, which keeps athletes engaged and gives coaches a concrete before-and-after.
How to film and measure it correctly
The measurement is where coaches either build trust in the number or destroy it. Three rules:
- Film from the side, at hip height, close enough to see both events. You need the frame where the body first commits toward home and the frame where the ball hits the target both clearly visible. A front-on angle hides the first move.
- Know your frame rate. Most phones shoot slow motion at 60, 120, or 240 frames per second. The math is: time = (frames between events) / (frames per second). If there are 156 frames between first move and impact at 120 fps, that is 1.30 seconds. Higher frame rates give more precise readings.
- Define "first move" and stick to it. The clock starts at the first movement toward the plate after the set - not the stillness of the set position, and not a pre-pitch waggle. Pick the frame consistently or every comparison is noise.
A note on what you are measuring at home versus on a field: against a wall you are timing first-move-to-ball-impact, which is slightly shorter than the true first-move-to-catcher's-glove used with a live receiver. That is fine. Use the wall number to track your own progress week to week, then validate the absolute number later with a partner and a stopwatch behind a catcher.
Benchmarks coaches can use
Use benchmarks as targets, not verdicts, and scale them by age and distance. At the professional and upper-amateur level, a time to plate of roughly 1.3 seconds or under from the stretch is the widely cited threshold for keeping the running game honest; many coaches flag 1.5 seconds and up as "stealable" almost regardless of the catcher. Younger pitchers throwing from shorter distances will post different raw numbers, and that is expected - the coaching goal at 12U-14U is a repeatable, quick-but-controlled delivery and steady improvement in the athlete's own average, not chasing a big-league stopwatch reading. Always pair the time with the strike rate to the box; a fast number that comes with a 40 percent miss rate is a step backward.
Fitting it into practice and a throwing program
Because this is full-intent throwing, timed reps count as pitches. Program it inside the athlete's normal throwing week and honor daily pitch-count and rest guidelines rather than piling it on top of a bullpen. A practical structure:
- Baseline day: 10 full-leg-lift reps and 10 slide-step reps, logging average time and strike rate for each. Now the athlete owns their real starting number.
- Trim block (a few sessions): shorten the hold and tighten the lower half, trying to cut 0.10-0.15 seconds off the average while keeping at least 8 of 10 in the box.
- Varied-look layer: mix a quick pitch, a one-second hold, and a three-second hold so quickness does not become a predictable tell, confirming the time stays low across looks.
- Transfer day: move to a bullpen with a catcher and a partner running a stopwatch, then combine the pitcher's time to plate with the catcher's pop time to rehearse the full steal defense as a battery.
Keep it to about 15 minutes and 30-40 throws so it sharpens a skill without becoming a hidden bullpen. In-season, a short baseline-and-trim block once a week keeps the number honest; off-season is the time to rebuild the delivery if the baseline reveals a slow, drifting move home.
Coaching the mindset
The biggest error athletes make is equating "quick" with "rushed." A frantic delivery that collapses the back leg or flies open produces a fast, wild pitch - and wild pitches move runners for free just like stolen bases. The cue that lands best is "quick, not rushed": eliminate wasted motion and drift, do not accelerate the parts of the delivery that produce strikes and velocity. Let the number be the scoreboard, let the taped box be the referee, and let the athlete compete against their own previous rep. That combination - a real metric, immediate video feedback, and a solo setup they can run in a driveway - is what turns time to plate from an ignored stat into a trainable weapon.
