HitTrax Exit Velocity Training: A Coach and Parent Guide to Hitting Harder

Exit velocity is the most honest number in hitting. A hitter can have a pretty swing, good timing, and a confident stride and still not hurt the baseball — and exit velocity (EV) is what exposes that gap. HitTrax, the camera-based hitting simulator found in most modern facilities, puts EV on a screen the instant the ball leaves the bat, which turns a vague feeling ("that one felt good") into a measurable, repeatable, coachable target.

Why exit velocity is worth chasing
EV is the cleanest proxy for raw power and barrel quality. As the coaches at Rockland Peak Performance put it:
"Peak EV is the hardest hit ball that the athlete achieves in a session. This is a good indicator of raw power and ability to hit the baseball hard without regards to the ball's trajectory."
That last phrase matters. Peak EV measures *how hard*, not *where it went*. That's exactly why it's the right first target in a power-focused session: you want the hitter to learn to deliver the barrel with maximum force before you start fussing over launch angle. Hard contact is the prerequisite for everything else — you can teach trajectory later, but you can't fake bat-on-ball force.
Peak EV vs. hard-hit rate
A single huge number is exciting but unreliable. Any hitter can run into one. The more useful training metric is the hard-hit rate — the share of balls hit with real authority. HitTrax handles this in a smart, age-fair way: instead of using the pro standard, it counts a ball as hard-hit if it lands within 90% of that player's own peak EV. So a hitter with a 100 mph peak needs 90+ mph to count; a 14U hitter with a 70 mph peak needs 63+. Every athlete is measured against themselves.
For context, MLB's Statcast uses a fixed bar: "Statcast defines a 'hard-hit ball' as one hit with an exit velocity of 95 mph or higher." That number is useful for understanding the pro ceiling, but it's the wrong yardstick for a 12-year-old. HitTrax's percentage-of-peak approach is what makes a youth session fair and motivating.
Exit velocity benchmarks by age
These are compiled benchmarks from large swing datasets (present them as ranges, not hard cutoffs — every kid develops on a different clock):
- 11–12U: average max EV ~55–60 mph; elite ~60–70 mph
- 13–14U: average ~60–65 mph; elite ~65–75 mph
- JV / 15U: ~70–80 mph; elite ~75–85 mph
- Varsity / high school: ~85–90 mph; elite 90–100 mph
- College: ~95–100 mph; elite 100–110 mph
A high school hitter who consistently posts 90+ mph is a real prospect; 95+ draws serious attention. For recruits, reaching the low 90s by junior year is a common target. Use these to set honest, motivating goals — not to make a young hitter feel behind.
How to run the session well
The biggest coaching job is managing intent without tension. Driveline frames the core problem simply:
"If you swing the bat slow but make solid contact, it isn't going to go very far. If you swing the bat fast but mishit the ball, it isn't going to go very far either."
You need both barrel speed and quality contact, and the trap is that hitters tighten up when you ask them to swing hard. Coach them to swing *fast and loose*, then let the screen confirm it. The instant feedback does the teaching: when a relaxed, aggressive swing posts a higher EV, the hitter feels it and repeats it.
A few practical rules:
- Establish a baseline first. Eight to ten easy swings, note the peak. That's the day's number to beat.
- Keep rounds short and rested. Tired swings produce junk data and grooved bad habits. Three rounds of 8–10 with real rest is plenty.
- Track the trend, not the day. Open last week's session beside today's. A rising peak *and* a rising hard-hit rate is the signal that training is working.
- Don't let everything turn into a ground ball. Pure EV chasing can groove a steep downswing; remind the hitter that hard line drives, not topped rockets, are the goal. (Launch angle gets its own dedicated session.)
Is it age-appropriate?
Max-intent swinging is more demanding than tee work, so this is best for roughly 12U and up once a hitter has a sound, repeatable swing. The movement load is moderate — it loads the lower back and obliques — so warm up the swing, cap the volume, and rest between rounds. For younger or newer hitters, keep the focus on clean contact and let EV come along naturally rather than encouraging an all-out hack.

Run it with smart intent, measure against the athlete's own peak, watch the weekly trend, and you'll build a hitter who does damage — not one who just looks good in the cage.
