Home-to-first time is one of the few baseball and softball metrics that shows up on almost every scouting card and turns routine ground balls into infield hits. Yet most "speed work" is just telling a kid to run harder. Why home-to-first time matters
Home-to-first is the purest test of *applied* speed for a hitter. Unlike a 60-yard dash from a track stance, it starts from a hitting finish, demands an immediate reaction, and ends in a hard finish through the bag. In pro scouting, evaluators grade the run tool largely off home-to-first, and the difference between a plus and an average runner is often just two to three tenths of a second — the exact margin that decides beat-the-throw plays. The mechanics: one run, three problems
A home-to-first sprint is not a single skill. It is three:
1. The box clear (start and early acceleration). The first 15-18 feet are pure acceleration from a near-standstill out of a hitting position. Maximal sprinting is safe and valuable for youth athletes when it is well-organized, but it demands respect. Keep total high-intensity sprint volume low and recovery long — quality over quantity.
