King of the Bag: A Small-Sided Game That Builds Throwing Accuracy

Ask any coach what loses close games and "errant throws" is near the top of the list. Not the throws that get booted in the dirt on a highlight reel, but the quiet ones: the throw a foot high that pulls the first baseman off the bag, the short-hop that eats up the shortstop, the relay that sails to the backstop. These aren't arm-strength problems. They're accuracy problems, and accuracy is a trainable skill. The catch is that most of the way we train throwing does almost nothing to build it.
Think about a typical infield or throwing block. Players field a ball, throw it, and jog to the back of the line. Nobody keeps score. Nobody feels the difference between a throw that arrives at the chest and one that arrives at the ankles. The reps pile up, but the intent doesn't. King of the Bag exists to fix that by making every throw count — literally.
Why small-sided competition works
Small-sided games are a staple of modern skill development in sports like soccer and basketball for a simple reason: they compress reps, raise engagement, and force decisions under pressure. Motor-learning research consistently shows that skills practiced with variability and meaningful consequences transfer to competition better than blocked, consequence-free repetition. When a throw is worth a point your team can win or lose, a player's attention snaps onto the one thing that matters: did the ball arrive where my teammate could catch it?
That's the whole design principle of King of the Bag. You split a group into two or three small teams. Each player throws to a receiver at a base, and a throw only scores if it arrives in a catchable window — roughly knee-to-chest, within a glove-reach of the bag, catchable without the receiver moving their feet. A throw dead at the chest is a bullseye worth two. Anything outside the window is a zero. Teams race to a target score. The scoreboard does the coaching for you: it rewards the catchable ball over the flashy one, and it makes misses cost something.
The one number that matters: throw accuracy percentage
The drill trains a single, cleanly measurable metric: throw accuracy percentage — the share of a player's throws that arrive catchable in the target window. This is deliberately narrow. You're not scoring velocity, arm slot, or footwork directly; you're scoring the outcome those things produce. When you log makes-out-of-attempts for each player, you get an honest baseline and a number you can chase across the season.
A reasonable target for an intermediate player at age-appropriate distance is 80% or better in the scoring window. Elite infielders on routine throws live well above that. If a player is sitting at 55%, you have a concrete, motivating gap to close — and because the game format keeps a running score, players self-correct in real time rather than waiting for a coach to walk over.
The mechanics that produce accuracy
The scoreboard rewards accuracy, but players still need to know *how* to be accurate. Four habits do most of the work, and they line up with what player-development groups like Driveline Baseball and long-standing coaching from USA Baseball emphasize:
- A four-seam grip. Fingers across the seams so the ball carries straight with clean backspin, instead of a two-seam grip that tails unpredictably. Good infielders find that grip in the glove without looking.
- One repeatable arm slot. A consistent high three-quarter slot with the elbow at or above the shoulder. When the slot is the same every time, misses become predictable and fixable. The body angle changes from position to position; the arm path shouldn't.
- Aim at the chest, not the bag. The receiver's chest is the true catchable target. Players who aim at the base tend to throw low and short-hop it.
- Line up the front side and finish through the target. Front shoulder, glove, and hip point at the receiver, then the throw finishes through the target rather than decelerating to guide it. Guided throws are the ones that sail.
Notice that none of these are about throwing harder. That's the point coaches have to protect during the game: because it's a competition, some players will instinctively try to impress with velocity and start spraying the target. Keeping a two-point bullseye for the perfect chest throw — and no bonus for speed — keeps the incentive pointed at accuracy.
Keeping the score honest
The single biggest way this drill breaks down is generous receiving. If the receiver reaches, jumps, or backhands a bad throw and calls it a catch, the miss disappears and the whole feedback loop collapses. Enforce still feet during scoring rounds: the receiver holds the glove chest-high and catches only what arrives in the window. A great catch shouldn't rescue a bad throw. This one rule is what makes the accuracy percentage you record actually mean something.
Fitting it into practice
King of the Bag slots neatly into the throwing or defensive block, and it doubles as an engaged, intent-building warm-up progression once arms are loose. Plan on about 20 minutes: three to four rounds, with each player getting 10 to 15 scored throws per round, landing around 40-50 total throws per player. Rotate the receiver role so everyone throws and everyone catches.
Respect the arm. Because the game rewards effort, players throw with more intent than they would in a casual line, so make sure arms are fully warm before scoring begins and keep total high-effort throws inside sensible daily limits — MLB Pitch Smart's workload guidance is the standard reference for youth arms. Keep throwing lanes and lines clearly separated so nobody is retrieving a ball in a live throwing path.
How to progress it
Start easy for younger or newer players: shorten the distance, widen the scoring window, and let them throw from a set position with no ground ball so they can focus purely on the throw. The standard version adds a ground-ball feed before each throw at full age-appropriate distance with a tight window. To make it a genuine test, add live footwork — a backhand feed, a slow-roller charge, or a double-play turn — shrink the window to chest-only, add a 3-second shot clock from field to release, or move it cross-diamond (third to first) to stress the longest, most accuracy-sensitive throw on the field.
Run it once a week, log the percentages, and post them. When players can see their accuracy number climbing week over week, the throw that used to sail to the backstop quietly turns into the throw that gets the out.
