Every hitting coach has said it a hundred times: “Swing hard.” And every coach has watched that cue evaporate the second the drill gets boring. Effort is not a mechanics problem — it's a motivation problem. The fastest way to fix it isn't another cue. It's a scoreboard. King of the Cage turns bat speed into a small-sided competition: two to four hitters go swing-for-swing on a sensor, and the higher peak number wins the point. Nobody has to be told to swing hard when a teammate just posted 71 mph and it's their turn.

Why bat speed is the number worth chasing
Bat speed matters because it's the lever on exit velocity, and exit velocity is what turns into hits, extra bases, and scout attention. Driveline Baseball has quantified the relationship as directly as anyone:

That's the whole business case. A hitter who wins two or three mph of bat speed — and keeps it — hits the ball meaningfully harder without changing a thing about their approach or their pitch selection. Bat speed is also one of the most trainable outputs in hitting. Unlike pitch recognition, which takes seasons to develop, swing intent responds fast. Give a hitter permission to let it eat, and the number climbs almost immediately. The problem is that permission tends to disappear in flat, repetitive batting practice. That's the gap this drill fills.
Why competition raises effort — the science of intent
The core idea behind this drill is well-supported in motor learning: how hard an athlete tries is not a constant. It's shaped by the environment. When training is framed as a competition — a defined winner, an opponent, a score — athletes self-select higher effort and stay engaged longer than they do in blocked, non-competitive repetition. There's a second, quieter benefit. Small-sided competition compresses a lot of high-quality reps into a short window and keeps arousal high without a coach nagging. Hitters wait for their turn, watch their opponent, and step in already fired up. The between-swing rest — which you actually need for max-effort work — is built into the format because someone else is hitting. In other words, the game naturally spaces the reps the way high-intent training should be spaced.
How the game runs
The mechanics are simple on purpose. Pair hitters into a 1v1 bracket, or run three to four in a free-for-all. Each round is a fixed number of swings — start with three. Hitters swing off a tee or controlled front toss so every rep is the same clean, hittable ball, and each hitter's score for the round is their single highest bat-speed reading across those three swings. Higher peak wins the point; best-of-three rounds wins the matchup. The winner stays as “King of the Cage,” the next challenger steps in, and you keep a running board of everyone's best number.
Why peak rather than average? Because you're training the ceiling. This is a max-intent drill, and rewarding the single best swing tells the hitter exactly what you want: find the top of your range. Averages are a better metric for consistency work; peaks are the right metric for a bat-speed competition.
Use each hitter's own game bat and a visible readout so the numbers are fair and transferable. A knob sensor like Blast or Diamond Kinetics, or a swing radar, all work — the only requirement is that everyone can see the score, because the score is the coach.
The safety piece coaches cannot skip
Here's the honest caution. A competition drives all-out effort, and all-out effort on a cold or fatigued body is how hitters overswing, lose balance, and tweak an oblique or a lower back. This is why the drill carries a moderate movement load and a 14U-and-up floor, not because younger kids can't compete, but because max-intent swinging deserves a real warm-up and real supervision.
Three rules make it safe. First, warm up fully — dynamic prep plus eight to ten build-up swings ramping from about 60% to full effort before anyone posts a scored swing. Second, keep rest honest between rounds; a gassed hitter posts a slower, sloppier number anyway, so nothing is lost by resting. Third, police the swing — a rep only counts if it's a balanced, in-play, full-finish swing. A hitter who lunges, uppercuts at air, or falls off the ball to spike the sensor is training the wrong thing and risking a strain for a fake number. Youth strength-and-conditioning guidance from organizations like the NSCA is consistent on this: high-intent and high-velocity work is appropriate for developing athletes when it's properly warmed up, supervised, and scaled. Compete, but compete inside good mechanics.
Common ways it goes wrong
The number-one failure is the hitter who swings so hard they get worse. Bat speed comes from an efficient sequence — ground up, push then whip — not from muscling the bat. When a hitter tenses up to “win,” they often post a slower reading than their controlled swing. Cue it: “beat the number, not the ball into the ground,” and “full swing, full finish, balanced.” The second failure is sensor-gaming — chasing a big readout with a swing that would never happen in a game. Add a contact gate (the swing must also produce a hard line drive, or hit the back net) once max-intent is grooved, so you're rewarding speed *and* a real strike. The third is emotional: don't let the loser rush the next swing angry. A quick reset breath keeps the reps clean.
Progressing it and proving it
Start best-of-three with a light consequence — loser re-racks — and raise the stakes gradually as intent climbs. Handicap fairly: match a younger or lighter hitter against their own recent average rather than a bigger teammate, so nobody overswings just to keep up. The last step is the one that separates a fun afternoon from actual development: log it. Record every hitter's top reading each session and chart it over time. Competition should make the peak bat-speed number trend upward across outings — if it doesn't, the game is entertaining but not training. Have a coach own the log so the gain is real and provable, not just a good day. It works the same for baseball and softball; the competitive intent that drives the barrel doesn't care which ball is on the tee.
