The box mostly serves to give you a controlled landing target so you can train explosive takeoffs repeatedly without pounding your joints.

Walk through the drill

Step 1 — Warm up
Do 5-8 minutes of light cardio plus hip and ankle mobility, then ramp up with lighter trap-bar sets. Never start a contrast pair cold.
Step 2 — Heavy trap-bar deadlift
Three crisp reps at a heavy-but-not-maximal load. Flat back, braced core, drive through mid-foot, stand tall. Keep 2-3 reps in reserve — this is a strength stimulus, not a max-out.
Step 3 — Rest
Rest about three minutes, staying lightly active with a walk or easy mobility.
Step 4 — Box jumps
Three to five maximal-intent jumps. Dip, swing the arms, explode up, and land soft and controlled. Step back down.
Step 5 — Repeat

Programming it into your off-season
Use this block in the off-season when you have time to build qualities without the demands of games. Early on, train the lift and the jump on separate days to groove technique. As your base solidifies, introduce the contrast pairing one to two times per week. Finally, measure your results. Retest your exit velocity (for hitters) and mound velocity (for pitchers) across the off-season. If your lower-half force is improving and transferring, you should see it show up where it counts — on the field.
