Turn Infield Throwing Accuracy Into a Number You Can Chase

Every infield coach has said it: "Just make the routine play." The routine play is almost never about range - it's about fielding a manageable ball and throwing it accurately to a base. Yet most practice reps train the wrong half of that. A coach hits fungoes that hop differently every time, the player makes an off-balance throw, and nobody can tell whether the bad throw came from the player or the ball. If you want to actually improve throwing accuracy, you first have to make it measurable. That's what a pitching machine or a controlled front-toss lets you do.
Why the feed has to be repeatable
Measurement needs a control. If the ground ball is different on every rep, then a missed throw could be the athlete's mechanics, or it could be a nasty in-between hop that forced a rushed grab. You can't separate the two, so you can't coach the throw. A machine set to a steady ground-ball feed - or a partner front-tossing consistent short hops from behind an L-screen - removes that noise. The ball arrives the same way every time, into the same spot, so the only variable left is the athlete's transfer and throw. Now a miss means something, and a percentage means something.
This is the same logic behind the tee in hitting. Coaches don't put hitters on a tee because game pitches come on a tee; they use it because removing the pitch variable isolates the swing. A machine-fed ground ball is the fielding equivalent - it isolates the transfer-and-throw so you can measure and rebuild it. Turning accuracy into a percentage
The drill is built around a single trackable metric: throw-accuracy percentage - the share of throws that land in a defined target zone. To make that honest, three things have to be nailed down:
- A defined target. Hang a marked zone on a net or behind a base, roughly the size of a first baseman's realistic stretch-and-catch window - about three feet wide, knee to chest. "In the zone" is a hit; anything the receiver would have to leave the bag or dig out of the dirt for is a miss. A fuzzy target produces a fuzzy number.
- A fixed fielding spot and distance. Mark where the athlete fields with a cone and set the throwing distance to a real infield throw for their level. If the starting point drifts, the difficulty drifts, and the percentage stops being comparable session to session.
- Honest scoring, in sets. Work in sets of 15, log hits and misses without rationalizing, and compute hits divided by throws. Session accuracy is total hits over total throws. Write it down - the number only helps if you can compare it to last week.
A reasonable competitive standard for a routine, controlled throw is landing in the zone on at least 70% of reps, then raising your own bar as you improve. The point isn't the exact threshold - it's that the athlete now has feedback that doesn't lie.
The mechanics the number rewards
When accuracy becomes visible, the right habits get reinforced automatically. A clean two-hand funnel to the middle of the body sets up a good grip and a repeatable release; a rushed one-hand grab does the opposite. Setting the feet so the throwing side lines up with the target makes the throw natural instead of steered. And this is the counterintuitive part coaches at every level repeat: a thrower who carefully aims tends to tighten up and shorten the arm path, which lowers accuracy. The cue is to throw *through* the target zone with a natural motion and let the feet and eyes do the aiming. The machine-fed format gives enough clean reps to groove that motion, which a handful of scattered fungoes never can.
Progressing it without over-throwing
The fastest way to ruin an accuracy drill is to turn it into a velocity contest. When effort spikes to max, the percentage collapses and - more importantly - throwing load piles up on a young arm. Keep effort game-realistic. Progress difficulty one lever at a time, and only after the current percentage holds above the goal: shrink the target, add feed speed, move the fielding spot deeper, or add a lateral first step so the athlete fields on the move before throwing. For an advanced variation, switch to a front-toss short-hop feed that forces a quick low pick before the throw - closer to a real backhand or in-between play, but still repeatable enough to score.
Respecting the arm
Throwing is a high-demand, repetitive movement, and repetitive throwing stress is the primary driver of youth arm injuries. That's why this is not an unlimited-reps drill. Warm up with dynamic arm-care movements and easy build-up throws before scoring anything. Cap total throws, rest 60 to 90 seconds between sets so fatigue doesn't quietly wreck both the mechanics and the arm, and take a rest day afterward. An accuracy day should leave the athlete with a better number and a healthy arm - never a sore one.
