How to Coach the Overload/Underload Contrast Target Throw for Infield Accuracy

Ask any infield coach where routine plays go to die and the answer is rarely the glove. It is the throw. A cleanly fielded ball that pulls the first baseman off the bag, sails to the backstop, or short-hops the pivot turns an out into extra bases. Velocity gets the attention, but the metric that shows up on the scoreboard is throw accuracy — the share of throws that hit the receiver in the chest, in stride. The Overload/Underload Contrast Target Throw drill is built to move that number, and it does it with a tool most facilities already own: weighted throwing balls.
Why weight contrast sharpens accuracy
Accuracy is a release-point problem. A throw that leaks arm-side, sails high, or dives into the dirt almost always traces back to the hand being in the wrong place, or the fingers being in the wrong spot on the ball, at the moment of release. The challenge is that a healthy, athletic arm is very good at grooving a pattern — including a slightly-off pattern — and repeating it on autopilot. That is great for consistency and terrible for correcting a miss, because the body stops paying attention.
Contrast training breaks the autopilot. A heavier-than-normal ball (overload) changes the timing of the throw: it wants to stay in the hand a fraction longer and release lower, so the athlete has to actively drive it up to the target and stay behind it. A lighter-than-normal ball (underload) does the opposite: it wants to release early and rise, so the athlete has to consciously stay on top and finish down. When you alternate the two into the same fixed target, the nervous system cannot coast. Every throw demands a fresh, deliberate search for the release window. That heightened, self-correcting attention is exactly the state in which motor skills refine fastest.
The idea of varied-weight implements to develop the throwing motion is well established in modern player development. Organizations like Driveline Baseball and the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI) have studied weighted-ball training extensively — most of that literature focuses on velocity and arm health, but the same variability principle applies when the target is command instead of speed. The difference is intent: here you deliberately keep effort submaximal and let accuracy lead.
Command, not velocity
This is the single most important coaching point, and it is easy to get wrong. Weighted balls are strongly associated with velocity programs, so players reach for them and immediately try to throw hard. That defeats the purpose. In this drill, effort sits around 80%. The overload and underload throws are teaching reps that recalibrate the release; only the game-weight ball that follows is scored. Frame it for your athletes plainly: 'We are not chasing the radar today. We are chasing the chest.'
Keeping effort down also matters for the arm. Because weighted throwing adds stress, coaches should treat these throws as part of the athlete's overall throwing workload, not free reps on top of it. That aligns with the workload philosophy behind MLB's Pitch Smart guidelines, which emphasize counting and capping high-intent throws and building in recovery. Overload work belongs after a full warmup and arm-care activation, never cold, and never for pre-teen arms.
How the drill fits into a practice
The drill is compact — about 15 minutes — and slots naturally into the throwing block of practice, right after players have completed their catch-play progression. A typical structure:
- Warm up fully first. Band activation, a throwing progression building out to distance, and only then introduce the weighted balls.
- Set one fixed, chest-high target. A netted square about 12 inches on a side, a taped wall square, or a partner holding a still glove. The target does not move; the athlete's job is to make the ball come to it.
- Run the cycle: one overload throw, one underload throw, one game-weight throw. Only the game-weight throw counts toward the accuracy tally.
- Score honestly. On-target means the ball hits the square, or is caught chest-high in stride. A throw the receiver has to reach for is a miss. Log on-target vs. total scored throws.
Because the scored rep is always the normal game ball, the number you record is a clean read on throw_accuracy_pct for that session, and it is directly comparable week to week.
Coaching cues that actually change the throw
- 'Stay behind it.' Fingers on top of the ball through release keeps the throw down in the zone. This is the cue that fixes the sailing underload throw.
- 'Chest to chest.' The throwing-side chest points at the target before release; misalignment here is the most common cause of arm-side leak.
- 'Same window.' Ask the athlete to release the heavy and light ball from the exact same spot out front. Owning that window is the whole point of the contrast.
- 'Firm, not fire.' A constant reminder that this is command work.
- 'Finish to the square.' Glove pulls to the hip, throwing hand finishes down and through the target.
Common mistakes to watch for
The biggest error is intent creep — players sneaking the effort up until it becomes a velo drill. Watch the finish; if throws start pulling glove-side or the athlete is grunting, dial it back. The second is scoring the wrong ball: only the game-weight throw counts, or the contrast benefit is lost in the noise. The third is a dropped elbow, which drags throws arm-side regardless of ball weight — a cue of 'thumb down, elbow up' usually fixes it. Finally, guard the warmup and the workload: weighted throws are never a cold activity, and they count against the day's throwing total.
How to progress it
Start every new athlete at Level 1 — stationary feet, short distance, a big target — so you capture a true baseline accuracy percentage. Then layer in difficulty:
- Level 2: add a crow-hop or shuffle at true position distance.
- Level 3: feed a short-hop or rolled ground ball first, so the throw follows real hands and a real transfer.
- Level 4: shrink the target and add a beat-the-clock count — most on-target game-ball throws in 60 seconds. Retest against the Level-1 baseline.
The measurable goal is simple and shared with the athlete: hit the chest-high target in stride on at least 8 of 12 scored game-ball throws (a throw accuracy of about 67%), and beat your own baseline over time. When the game ball starts feeling weightless and the target looks huge, the contrast has done its job — and that easy, repeatable release is what shows up when a real ground ball is hit with a runner flying down the line.
