Learning to Stop: Why Deceleration and Landing Control Matter for Young Athletes

Coaches spend enormous energy teaching athletes to go - to sprint, jump, and explode. Far fewer teach them to stop. That's a problem, because stopping is both a performance skill and a safety skill. A baserunner who can't decelerate can't change direction; an athlete who can't absorb a landing puts dangerous stress on the knee. The good news: deceleration and landing control are trainable, and they respond fast - even to a single good session.
Why landing control matters
Most non-contact lower-body injuries happen during deceleration, not acceleration - landing from a jump, planting to cut, or braking hard. The single most dangerous fault is knee valgus, the knee caving inward on landing or stopping, which spikes stress on the ACL. The fix is teaching athletes to absorb force the right way: land soft, achieve triple flexion (bend at ankle, knee, and hip), keep the knee tracking over the toes, and hold a stable trunk.
Encouragingly, the research shows landing technique improves quickly with deliberate practice. A study of youth athletes found that even one injury-prevention session changed how they landed:

How it works in the body
Deceleration is eccentric strength in action: the muscles lengthen under tension to brake the body. When an athlete "sticks" a landing, they're rehearsing exactly that braking pattern under control - loading the hips back, bending to absorb, and stabilizing the joint stack before they'd re-accelerate. This is the same skill set that lets a baserunner slam on the brakes and reverse, a fielder plant and change direction, and a hitter or pitcher brake the front leg to redirect rotational energy up the chain. Teaching the two-second stick is the coaching trick that forces the athlete to actually own the landing rather than rush through it - if they can't hold it, the landing wasn't controlled.
Common mistakes coaches should watch for
The top fault to hunt for is the knee caving inward - cue "knees over your toes" and stop the set if it keeps collapsing, because that's the exact pattern these programs exist to fix. Second is the stiff, straight-legged landing; athletes must bend to absorb, not slam down rigid. Third is loud, heavy landings - quiet feet are the audible sign of good force absorption, so make "silent landings" a target. And the meta-rule: progress only when the current level is clean. Two-foot landings before single-leg, low boxes before high, sticks before speed. An athlete who wobbles or catch-hops jumped beyond their current control.
Age-appropriateness
This is appropriate for the youth range when it's introduced in the right order. The landing positions are bodyweight and the impact is low at the early stages - the snap-down and two-foot stick are gentle and suitable broadly. The single-leg landings and any added box height or jump distance raise the load, so those carry a sensible age floor and should wait until two-foot landings are genuinely clean. Run the lower levels with younger athletes and earn the harder ones; never chase distance or height before the stick is silent and solid. Used this way, landing-control work is some of the highest-value time you can spend - it builds athleticism and durability at once.
The takeaway
Teach young athletes to stop as deliberately as you teach them to go. Soft, silent, stuck landings with the knees tracking over the toes protect a growing knee and build the deceleration control that powers safe cutting, sliding, and base-running. It improves fast, it doesn't cost performance, and it belongs in every warm-up and off-season block.
