The Tee-Gate Block Drill: A Constraint That Fixes Stay-Down Posture and Raises Block %

Ask ten coaches why a catcher misses blocks and most will say the same thing: he didn't get in front of it. But watch enough dirt balls and a more specific truth shows up. The catcher usually *does* move to the ball - the problem is what the body does when it gets there. It comes up. It rocks back. The chest goes vertical, the ball hits a hard, upright surface, and rebounds far enough that a runner advances. Blocking is far less about lateral quickness than it is about staying down and getting the chest over the ball, and that is exactly the habit the Tee-Gate Block drill is built to train.

Why block % is the number that matters
A catcher's job on a ball in the dirt is not to catch it. It's to *keep it in front* so runners can't advance. That's why the cleanest way to measure blocking is block percentage: of all the balls thrown into the dirt, what share did the catcher contain in front of them? It rewards the actual game outcome (the ball stayed close, the runner held) rather than style points. Every rep in this drill gets charted the same way, so a coach and a catcher can watch the number move week to week instead of guessing whether 'blocking looks better.'
The reason posture drives that number is simple physics. A ball in the dirt arrives with pace. If it meets a vertical, rigid chest, it bounces off like a wall. If it meets a chest that is angled forward and softly rounded - shoulders curled, chin tucked, weight into the toes - the same ball deadens and drops straight down at the catcher's knees. Same throw, completely different result, and the only variable is body position.
The constraint: why a batting tee
Coaches have cued 'stay down!' forever, and it mostly doesn't stick, because a verbal cue after the rep is too slow and too easy to ignore. A constraint changes that. Constraint-based coaching - designing the environment so the correct movement is the only one that works - is a well-established idea in motor learning and shows up across modern player-development programs. Instead of telling the athlete what to do, you build a task where the right answer is self-evident.
Here the constraint is a batting tee set about a foot in front of the plate, topped with a foam ball, with the height dialed to the catcher's mask *in a correct low block*. Now the catcher has a gate they cannot clip. Pop up to catch the ball? The mask knocks the foam ball off - immediate, unmistakable feedback, no whistle required. Stay down and drive the chest forward? The mask glides under the gate and the ball dies at the knees. The tee turns an abstract cue ('stay low') into a concrete, binary task the athlete can feel on every single rep.
Paired with the tee is a trap zone - tape, chalk, or a rope loop marking a box about arm's length around the front of the plate. A block that dies inside the box is contained; one that squirts out is a miss. That box is your block % scoreboard, and it keeps scoring honest: it doesn't matter how pretty the block looked, only whether the ball stayed in the zone.
Running the drill
Start with three calibration reps and no throw, just to set the tee height so the mask passes cleanly under the gate in a good block. Then work three sides. Center blocks first - straight-in short hops - to groove the chest-forward, chin-tuck, rounded-shoulder posture. Then arm-side and glove-side, where the catcher drops the opposite knee to angle the chest back toward the middle so the ball redirects into the trap zone instead of caroming out to the side. The gate still governs height on side blocks, which stops the most common lateral-block error: coming up to reach the ball.
Build the smother into every rep - the bare hand covers the deadened ball inside the zone. Later, add a 'runner going!' call so the catcher learns to locate and secure the ball fast, because a contained ball that a catcher can't find still lets a runner take a base.
Chart contained vs. miss out of ten on each side. A useful success standard is 80% or better (8 of 10) on the center round and on each side across two consecutive rounds, with no tee clips. Expect the glove side to lag - that's normal and tells you where to spend reps.
Keeping it safe
Blocking is a repetitive-impact skill, so treat it like one. Full catcher's gear is required on every rep - mask or helmet, chest protector, shin guards, and cup. Start with tennis balls or soft training balls and only move to regulation balls once the posture is clean and the athlete is confident; there is no development benefit to blocking hard balls before the body knows what to do. Never top the tee with a hard ball. Cap the volume - blocking is fatiguing on the knees and wrists, and a tired catcher reinforces bad posture. Youth throwing and catching organizations consistently emphasize gear, gradual progression, and fatigue management, and this drill lives comfortably inside those guardrails when you keep ball hardness and rep counts age-appropriate.
Progressing it
- 12U and new catchers: foam or tennis balls, gate set slightly high, center-only short hops until the containment number climbs.
- 14U-16U: the full three-side sequence with training balls, gate at true blocking-mask height, charting each side.
- High school through college: regulation balls, a machine feeding into the dirt at game velocity, randomized sides with no verbal cue, and a stopwatch or runner call so the catcher must both contain the ball and recover to locate a runner. Add a back-to-back rule - a second ball fed immediately - to train containment under fatigue, which is where block % quietly erodes in late innings.

Blocking gets treated like an athletic gift when it's really a trained posture.
