Tee-Gate Outfield Route Timing Drill: The Coach's Guide

Ask ten outfielders whether they took a good route and ten will say yes. The video usually disagrees. Route efficiency — how close a fielder's actual path comes to the shortest line to the ball — is one of the most valuable and least-trained skills in the outfield, precisely because it's so hard to feel in the moment. The Tee-Gate Outfield Route Timing Drill solves that by making the route visible and turning it into a single number: of_route_time_s, the time it takes to reach a fixed fly-ball spot.
This guide explains why the drill works, how to run it, how it fits into practice, and how to progress it so your outfielders keep getting faster to the ball.
Why route efficiency matters more than raw speed
Range in the outfield is not just foot speed. Major-league defensive metrics make this explicit: MLB's Statcast tracks route efficiency alongside sprint speed and reaction, because two fielders with identical speed can post very different catch rates based on the path they choose. A player who drifts, rounds off, or takes a false step forward is effectively running a longer race than the ball requires — and giving up ground he can't get back.
The issue is feedback. A hitter gets instant feedback from exit velocity and ball flight. An outfielder's route feedback is delayed, subjective, and easy to rationalize. Coaches shout 'better angle!' but the player has no clean way to know whether this rep was better than the last. Without an objective signal, route habits don't change.
The tee-gate setup supplies that signal in two ways at once — a spatial constraint and a clock.
What makes this drill different: the constraint
Most outfield route work is either pure reads off the fungo (great for game realism, poor for isolating the line) or verbal correction (subjective). This drill adds a physical constraint gate: two tees or cones, four to five feet apart, straddling the ideal straight line from the fielder's start to the ball's landing spot.
To record a rep, the outfielder has to run *through* that gate. That one rule does an enormous amount of coaching automatically:
- Rounding the route (the classic banana turn) sends the player outside a gate tee — a no-count rep, felt instantly, no argument.
- A false step forward before the drop-step shows up as a slower clock, every time.
- Coasting to the finish to look smooth inflates the recorded time.
Constraint-based practice is well supported in motor-learning research: constraints implicitly guide movement toward the desired pattern without the coach having to over-cue every rep, and they tend to produce learning that transfers and sticks. Here the constraint is the straight line itself. The player isn't told a hundred times to 'take a better angle' — the gate makes the good angle the only way to score the rep.
The catch-tee — a batting tee with a ball on top, marking the exact landing spot — anchors the other end. Because the target is fixed and known (at first), the drill strips out ball-flight-reading variability so the fielder can focus purely on the line and the finish. That's what lets the stopwatch produce a clean, comparable number rep to rep.
How to run it
Set a start cone, place the catch-tee 45–60 feet away on a drop-step diagonal, and put the two gate tees about two-thirds of the way along the straight line between them. The fielder starts in an athletic ready position. On a sharp 'Go!', the coach starts the clock, the fielder drop-steps and sprints the straight line through the gate, makes a catch action over the correct shoulder at the catch-tee, and the coach stops the clock the instant the ball is secured. That elapsed time is the rep's of_route_time_s.
Only clean-gate reps count. Miss the gate — run outside either tee — and it's a no-count: reset and go again. Run six clean routes per round (two to each side plus two straight-back reads), four rounds, with full recovery between reps so effort stays honest and the times stay meaningful.
The measurable goal isn't a single magic number — it's improvement within the session and across weeks. A good success check: the average of the last three clean reps is at least 0.2 seconds faster than the first three, with every rep passing cleanly through the gate. For context on absolute times, a to-the-spot route on this kind of setup commonly lands in the mid-3-second to mid-4-second range for youth through high-school players, trending faster with age and skill; use your own athletes' baselines rather than chasing someone else's number.
Where it fits in practice
Because it's a timed, near-maximal effort with full recovery, treat it like a skill/speed block, not conditioning. Run it early in practice after a full dynamic warm-up, when players are fresh and fast — a fatigued outfielder posts slower, sloppier routes that teach the wrong thing.
It pairs naturally with reaction and tracking work. A typical outfield day might open with a dynamic warm-up, move into first-step/read reaction work, then this tee-gate timing block, then live fungo or a scrimmage where the routes show up under game conditions. In-season, one focused round as a 'sharpener' keeps route quality honest without adding much volume. In the off-season it becomes a weekly benchmark you log and trend.
It also travels well to showcases and tryouts, where evaluators are increasingly clocking outfield reads and route quality, not just 60 times.
Coaching the reps
Keep your cues short and external — pointed at the line and the target, not the mechanics of the legs. 'Run the string' (a taut line from feet through the gate to the ball), 'first step wins the race', and 'sprinter's chest, glove up late' do more than a mechanical lecture. Let the gate and the clock deliver most of the feedback; your job is mainly to guard against the two ways players cheat the drill — cutting the gate to shave time, and coasting the last two strides to look smooth. Both are no-counts.
How to progress it
Start with a known direction and the static catch-tee so the fielder isolates the line. Then withhold the direction until 'Go!', pointing left, right, or back so the read goes live while the gate and target stay fixed. Next, replace the catch-tee with a real fly ball off a fungo or machine to the same spot, keeping the gate — now you're timing bat-contact to catch on a genuine read. Finally, add a crow-hop and throw to a base after the catch to build game transfer, while still logging route time as the metric. As routes tighten, narrow the gate to three or four feet to demand more precision.
The throughline never changes: one honest number, of_route_time_s, that your outfielders can see fall as their routes get cleaner.
