Leg Drive and the Front-Side Block: Where Velocity Really Comes From

Every coach has seen the kid who throws "all arm" — great effort, mediocre velocity, and an elbow that barks by July. The fix is almost always lower in the chain. Velocity is built from the ground up: a back leg that drives the rubber and a front leg that holds give the trunk and arm something powerful to whip against. This guide covers the mechanics, the research, and how to coach the mound leg-drive load-and-explode velocity drill.
Push the rubber back, ride the drive
The move that unlocks lower-half velocity is a hard, forward drive off the rubber. Coaches at Elite Baseball Performance describe it plainly:
"After peak leg lift, the pitcher needs to focus on driving the rubber back towards second base and pushing his entire body down the mound." — Brantley Freeman, Elite Baseball Performance (source)
The cue is intent and speed, not a forced shape. As Freeman adds, "If a pitcher thinks 'push fast' or 'drive fast' away from the rubber with his entire body, the back leg will naturally bend and move efficiently and explosively down the mound" (source). That is why the drill uses a light counterweight: holding a plate at the chest exaggerates the load into the back hip so the athlete feels what a real drive requires before chasing it empty-handed.
The front leg is the other half of the equation
Driving hard is only useful if you can stop it. The front leg is the brake that converts linear momentum into rotation and arm speed — the "lead-leg block." If the front knee drifts or collapses, the energy the back leg created leaks straight into the ground. PRP Baseball makes the point bluntly in its work on training the block:

So the drill pairs the drive with a deliberate cue to land and hold: a firm front side that accepts the force and stiffens. Drive plus block is the whole equation.
How the drill works
The athlete first does loaded holds — counterweight at the chest, balanced leg lift, settle into the back hip, then push the rubber back and ride down the mound with a firm landing — no throw. Once that load-and-explode is grooved, they set the weight down and throw with the same drive, building from about 70% to full intent, ideally with a radar gun so the lower-half improvement shows up as real speed. Common mistakes
The big ones: drifting forward and dumping the load before driving (no stored energy to release), a soft front leg that collapses at landing (the leak), and a stiff back leg that stabs forward instead of bending and exploding. Also watch sequence — if the upper body rushes ahead of the legs, the chain fires out of order and velocity drops. And the programming mistake: stacking max-effort velo work on top of a heavy bullpen or game day.
Age-appropriateness and arm care
This is advanced, high-stress work: max-effort mound throwing layered onto a loaded stride. We set it at 15U and up, for pitchers who already have a repeatable delivery and a base of strength. Keep velo throwing low-volume and on a schedule, never pile it onto an already-heavy throwing day, and stop the moment mechanics or velocity break down — fatigued max-effort throws are where arms get hurt. Younger pitchers can do the loaded holds (no throw) to learn the load and drive without the throwing stress.
