How to Throw Harder: A Pitcher's Guide to Plyo-Ball Velocity Training

Every pitcher eventually asks the same question: *how do I throw harder?* Velocity opens doors — it gets you looks at showcases, lets you work the top of the zone, and buys margin on every other pitch. But the answer isn't "just throw more." Velocity is the product of how fast your arm can move with full intent inside a clean, connected delivery. That's a trainable quality, and one of the most effective tools for training it is the weighted plyo ball.

What plyo balls are and why they work
Plyo balls are soft, sand- or gel-filled weighted balls, usually sold in sets ranging from very light up to a couple of pounds. That single feature unlocks the whole point of the tool: you get to throw with true maximum intent, over and over, and feel the arm move fast.
Overloading the throwing pattern with heavier balls and underloading it with lighter ones teaches the nervous system to recruit arm speed more aggressively. Why "intent" is the whole game
You can do the right drills with the wrong effort and get nothing. Velocity work is neurological as much as physical — you're teaching the arm to fire faster than it's used to. Tentative, 80% throws reinforce 80% arm speed. The measured pulldown, thrown as hard as you can run into it, is the rep that actually moves the needle.

The two drills at the core of the block
Reverse throws (build the brakes and the connection)
Reverse throws come first. Standing side-on to a wall, you counter-rotate the trunk, let the arm lay back, and throw a heavier plyo ball backward over your throwing shoulder into the wall. They activate the posterior shoulder, train trunk stacking and counter-rotation, and build the deceleration capacity that lets you safely throw harder later in the session. They're a staple opener in plyo routines for exactly that reason.
Pulldowns (express the max-intent arm speed)
Pulldowns are the headline drill. With a lighter plyo ball, you take a short run-in — a crow-hop or shuffle that gains momentum — and throw the ball as hard as humanly possible down a long lane on a line. Coaches favor pulldowns on velocity days because the arm stress profile is similar to high-intent pitching, making them a specific, transferable way to train top-end arm speed:

How to run a measured velo block
Here's the shape of a session, start to finish:
- Warm up and ramp fully — dynamic work, arm-care bands, and progressive catch out to a long-toss feel. Never start intent work cold.
- Reverse throws at moderate intent — 1–2 sets of 5–8 with a heavier ball to wake up the back side and connection.
- Build intent on medium and lighter balls with rocker or walking-windup throws, climbing the intent ladder.
- Pulldowns — 3–5 max-effort throws per ball weight across a few weights, each one measured on the gun.
- Cap volume and cool down — stop while throws are crisp, then light catch and recovery arm care.
A few non-negotiables: this is off-season, max-effort training for arms with an established base. Keep true max-intent throwing to about 1–2 times per week, with low-intent and recovery days in between — three high-intent days a week is too much. And any arm pain ends the session.

Fitting it into a season
Velocity blocks live in the off-season, when you have weeks to build, peak, and recover without competing. If you're targeting a showcase, time the peak of the block so your fresh, trained arm speed shows up on radar day, then taper intent into the event. In-season, the priority shifts to recovery and command — you maintain, you don't chase peaks.
Track your top pulldown and intent-throw numbers every session and compare them against your mound fastball velocity over the block. Rising plyo numbers that don't show up on the mound usually point to a mechanics or sequencing issue worth addressing with a coach — the radar tells you where to look.

Throwing harder is trainable, but it's earned through *measured max intent* layered on top of a properly prepared arm.
